High-Rise Jeans: Run, Don’t Walk!

High-rise jeans | Girlfriend is Better

The high-rise pant has been on trend for quite some time – I’ve only seen it popularly worn around here as butt-baring shorts (which are rarely flattering on anyone). Why are people such suckers for unflattering trends? Know your body! More on that later. As flares have been challenging skinny jeans, I’ve noticed the mid and high-rise has been creeping around. Totally inspired, I started on the mad hunt for the perfect pair.

High-Rise Hunting/ Gathering

I had a vision in my head for what I wanted; seventies-style flared jeans with a high-rise waist and front pockets.  My friend Tracy and I started scouring the internet for my vision of the perfect new jeans to update my wardrobe.  We looked at couture, small boutiques, anything we could think of.  We did a Google search on high-rise flared jeans and I was so disappointed!  All of the celebrities were wearing flares, but they were super long. Also paired with insane platforms, they were still dragging the ground.  I hate shopping with a vision in my head.  It’s always impossible.

Stock Up!

Tracy finally helped me find a pair and I took them home and gave them the custom leg-length treatment (ie. chopped the hem so they’d fit with a pair of Converse). What struck me the most was the unbelievable comfort of having a high waist! Loving them for days. I was so sold, I went back to H&M that week and bought another pair of the same jeans that I kept long. There is something to be said about being able to tuck a shirt in and have it stay (without it needing to be so long it bunches below the waist).

Music Alert! Here’s a great track by Klangkuenstler featuring Alice Phoebe Lou.  It’s got great vocals and is super upbeat, which matches my enthusiasm for the high-rise.

Flattery Will Get You Everywhere

As with any article of clothing, if you’re going to get a pair, make sure you keep the focus on whether or not they flatter you.  Next, if they make you look out of proportion or emphasize areas you’d rather not draw attention to, then keep looking.  We’ve done all of the hard work for you and found the most flattering styles that are sure hits.  It’s a lot harder to find these than you would think!  So hopefully we’re saving you some leg work (see what I did there) ;p

Welcome to the Dark Side

If you’ve got a darker side (like me) try black skinny high-rise jeans. I’m not seeing very many people wearing them yet, so they still seem to be ahead on trend.  The last pair I bought were from Urban Outfitters.  An ad campaign where the model was sporting them with old heavy metal tees was all the inspiration I needed.  Where do I sign?  I tried a pair on, and they fit like a glove.  This variety can almost double as a legging, but with a waist that is actually flattering.  So surprised.

Sold!  To the Lady with the Obsession

Yep, bought these. BDG seamed high-rise in black. They could potentially be a uniform. Everything goes with them.  Channeling my inner Patti Smith.

Wearing high rise jeans is like wearing a hug *

Finally, I’ve been so happy with these jeans and they are a great update to my closet. I’ve decided skinnies and flares can both come or go – the crème de la crème is the high-rise. If you’ve found a great pair, please share!  I’m always looking for more..

  1. Hello. I LOVE the pair of high waisted jeans in the first pic. Do you know what brand/where it’s from?

    Thanks,
    Jennifer Rose

    1. Hi Jennifer Rose. Same—that waist detail is to die for. I believe they are vintage. Sigh!
