Movies make a big impact on both of us visually. We are constantly inspired by fashion and retro style that is spot-on in our favorite flicks. One of the most fun things about working together is taking an idea and seeing what each of us will do with it. Welcome to Kimi + Gina’s first annual movie weekend! We’ve compiled a few of our favorite movies from our Netflix queue and added some fun shopping ideas to go along! So cozy up and let your fingers do the walking.
The Get Down | Kimi
Of course, the late 70’s style of The Get Down is what placed it on my movie night radar. I was just a kid back then but I loved the clothes and I’ve never lost my heart for denim bell bottoms and cheeky t-shirts. As if the wardrobe and aesthetic aren’t enough, the story line begs for a binge watch but I’m savoring this one! The cast is fantastic, the music is insane and the dancing makes me so happy I can’t stand it! The Get Down is historically raw and beautifully theatrical all bundled up in an eye candy show that won’t stop.
No Country For Old Men | Gina
I’m a sucker for dark movies that keep you on the edge of your seat. If you haven’t seen No Country for Old Men yet, best get on it! Starring Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin, the Coen brothers’ neo-Western thriller is the type of movie that stays with you. After a hunter (Brolin) stumbles on a drug deal gone wrong, he finds himself one step ahead of a merciless killer (Bardem). Will the old town sheriff (Jones) find him in time? Throw on your sh*tkickers and cowboy up, because boy, are you in for a ride.
Soul Boys of The Western World | Kimi
It was the summer between my junior and senior year of high school that I jumped head on into ‘New Wave’. I went from Van Halen to The Cure in just a few short weeks and I never looked back. Soul Boys of the Western World is about the band Spandau Ballet and documents the British scene that changed music (and me) forever! The style is fabulous and the music is divine! If you were a child of the 80’s or have a love for all the cool electronic synth pop that’s everywhere today, you will be entertained.
Stranger Things | Gina
Best flashback to the 80’s sci-fi horror flick made in a long time! Stranger Things is a Netflix original that is perfect for movie night after movie night. Starring Wynona Ryder, the movie is about a mom who’s son goes missing in the small town of Indiana. Everyone gets involved in the eerie search: his best friends, the town sheriff, his brother, and high school friends. A young, psychokinetic girl (with a shaved head – yes!) tosses vehicles around and helps protect the Dungeons and Dragons-loving boys. I was seeing my middle school outfits scene in and scene out – so much fun! Keep your eye on Millie Bobby Brown.. she’s going places.
Sing Street | Kimi
If 16 Candles and Moonrise Kingdom formed a band it would be Sing Street. And ya, I’m super aware I’m sticking with the music theme here. It’s in my bones! If you’ve been aching for a feel good movie night with loads of soul, big dreams, and a download worthy original soundtrack, order take out ‘cuz I’m pretty sure I just found your weekend pick!
The Big Short | Gina
Produced in part by Brad Pitt, The Big Short basically affected my view of the future. Also starring Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale and Steve Carell (I’m a name dropper when it comes to movies) this movie literally blew my mind. It follows three separate but parallel stories of the housing crisis that happened in 2005. They do a fantastic job at informing the viewer in a humorous and much easier-to-follow way. A bank was interviewing me for work and when they said, “you don’t get much more stable than a bank”, I literally laughed out loud.
