Move over Bohemian, there’s a new decor girl in town. Now that the holidays are upon us, trendsetters are cozying up to Hygge decor. Pronounced “heu-gah”, the Danish concept focuses more on a state of mind, than an accessory. The beauty of using nature and natural fibers is a-ok in our book.  Learn more how to Hygge up your space with these simple ideas.

Hygge Decor How-To

First step: go outside.  Creating a tablescape using Hygge decor principles is as accessible as the nature around you!  Gather branches and twigs and get creative about creating napkin rings and place setters. If you liked our mix-and-match ideas from our Spring tablescapes article, the rules still apply. We’re loving that Anthropologie’s Salma Dinnerware is currently on sale.  They do the mixing expertly for you! Pretty dishes and a few sprigs of pine is all it takes to create a charming table.

Baby’s Breath Bouquets

No need to break the bank on centerpieces.  You can easily make beautiful winter bouquets with a touch of Hygge decor.  Mix branches with Baby’s Breath, or other simple fillers.  Bless your home with a new arrangement every week!  You’re worth it.  The trick is to find the right vase – stick to ceramic pottery or sturdy glass vases.  Take a look at these Snow-Capped Vases from Anthro.  They make a wonderful hostess gift or thank you vessels for mom.

Candles Like No One is Watching

Turn the lights down and grab a book of matches.  Hygge decor is all about lighting and the more candles you display, the merrier!  (FYI, Trader Joe’s sells taper candles for $2.99 for a box of 8. ) Feel free to group them together and take turns lighting them, one-by-one each night.  Lovely!  Also, use white string lighting anywhere and everywhere.  We just recently posted a gem on our Instagram (@gfisbetter) with white lights bunched up on a bonfire pit.  Heavenly!

Our fashion department has been trying to get you guys outside!  Check out our 70’s-inspired hiking clothes and favorite coats for Winter 2017Go for a walk and find a branch that would add the perfect Hygge decor feel to your bedroom.  While we’re on the subject, the only thing you should possess more of than candles, are blankets.  Check out Anthropologie’s blanket collection, or grab a faux fur throw from World Market while they’re on sale.

Natural Gift Wrap

I’ve always been a huge fan of brown paper for gift wrap.  Not only is it perfect Hygge decor for under the tree, but it’s seasonless.  Add a sprig of pine during the winter, or a blossom in the spring.  Less is more and adding a slice of nature is always a wonderful touch.  World Market also carries Boxed Gift Tags in a set of 10 for $3.99.  Add them to your cart with your furry blanket!

Sweetness in Your Mug

Give Santa a run for his money! Hot cocoa and sweet, nutty lattes are the Hygge decor accessory beverages. This recipe for Salted Peanut Butter Cookie Lattes are just the ticket. How can you say no to a tasty beverage and a side of cookies? This is a great gift idea as well. Layer the dry ingredients in a pretty jar and include the recipe. Done!

Cozy, Cozy, Cozy

Put your fuzzy socks on! Any good realtor will tell you that the three most important things for Hygge decor are: cozy, cozy, cozy.  Scandinavian countries always top the lists as the happiest people on earth. It’s worth your while to pay attention to their nesting techniques!  BTW, this isn’t the last you’ve heard of Hygge from us, but it should get you started in the right direction for now.  (Be sure to scroll down and add your email address to our Newsletter Signup.)  Ho, Ho! Happy decorating!
